Designers, contractors, owners and users of builidngs, as well as the public may now be certain that the Knauf Insulation products are safe.
Frequently asked questions related to human health
- Is stone wool harmful for human health?
For many years, stone wool has been the subject of various studies and investigations dealing with its effects on human health. That is why stone wool products are checked by international health organizations and expert groups, from the aspect of potential harmfulness for human health. In accordance with such researches, these products are classified into the group of products that are not harmful for human health. This was officially acknowledged at IARC meeting (International Agency for Research onCancer) held on 9-16 October 2001 in Lyons,France, when mineral wool, and with it, stone wool, was classified into “Group3”, i.e. as a non-cancerous material.
- Is there any hazard for employees during the production and installation of stone wool?
The results of numerous researches show no relation between the exposure to stone wool fibers and increased risk of pulmonary diseases. During the production, highly biodegradable fibers are generated which are not hazardous for human cells. After accidental inhalation of stone wool particles, these particles are soon released from the organism or dissolved in body fluids. - Do the fibers cause troubles after the installation of insulation?
There are many questions about the quantity of stone wool fibers in premises intended for people after the installation of insulation. Here are some essential facts:
· Once installed, stone wool does not release fibers into air; the measuring carried out in an insulated building showed that quantities of the fibers in air are so low that they often cannot be measured. · Stone wool fibers are not found in citizens’ lungs. The conclusion is that the level of these fibers is very low and that incase of exposure the fibers are not retained in the lungs long enough to be hazardous for human health.
Some people feel temporary “itching” after stonewool handling. This “itching” is a mechanical reaction, not a chemical one, to rough and coarse fibers of stone wool and it usually stops when there is no more exposure to the fibers and/or after washing the hands under a strong flush of water. It is not recommendable to rub and scratch the irritated spot.
- Irritation of throat and eyes?
Possible irritation of the upper respiratory tract and eyes is similar to that caused by dust of various origin. After accidental exposure to stone wool fibers, go out to fresh air and rinse the throat and eyes with plenty of water, for several minutes. If the irritation persists, obtain medical advice.
